Latest News and Events: David's latest book 'Photographing Cornwall' is also his fastest selling, after only 10 months since it was published Alison Hodge (the publisher) is already sending it for a re-print. Also on the theme of photography David has just started a series of articles for Cornwall Today on photographic techniques and photography in Cornwall, that begins in the February 2012 issue of the magazine. Also David is currently writing a series of articles looking at various photographic techniques for MMM (a motorhome magazine). You may have noticed that David has had a lot of 'Viewpoints' features in Outdoor Photography over the last 12 months. David is involved, as a judge. with a photographic competition organised by Cornwall Wildlife Trust in conjunction with the West Briton. Keep an eye on the pages of the West Briton during February for more information. David is leading a natural history and photography workshop/walk from Prussia Cove to Cudden Point on Saturday 28th April from 11am to 4pm on behalf of the National Trust. He will be looking for flowers, birds and landscapes to photograph along the way. The tadpole photograph with which David won the IGPOTY 'wildlife in the garden' section in 2011 will be exhibited at the New York Botanical Garden in January 2012, so if you are going please take a photo of the exhibition and send it to David! David's book 'Exploring the Cornish Coast' has been appearing the the Amazon best-seller list for regional geographical books. The highest place we have spotted is 13th in October 2011, which isn't bad when you consider that it's up against books from all over the world and it has been in print for four years! The Cornwall Wildlife Trust AGM and Discovery day will be held on Saturday the 12th of November at Launceston College from 10am to 3pm. David will be giving the final presentation of the day entitled 'Tales of a Wildlife Photographer' at 2.15pm. Booking for this event is essential phone 01872 273939 for further details. David is presenting a talk about the wildlife of Godolphin on 8th November in Townshend Village Hall, starting at 7pm. David is planning a trip to the Pyrenees next year; the flora and fauna of the area sounds amazing, if you are interested he recommends a look at this website for local wildlife knowledge and walks www.hikepyrenees.co.uk/index David is leading a photo walk at Heligan Garden as part of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Celebration Day on the 19th September from 1.30 to 3.30pm. Members of CWT should have got a free pass for the garden with the summer issue of Wild Cornwall otherwise you will have to pay to get in but the guided walk is free. There are lots of other things going on as well. Get in touch if you are interested. Have a look for the magazine called 'Go Birdwatching' which is in newsagents now. This is an annual magazine aimed at beginners, it is published by Warner's Group. David was Photographic Consultant for this magazine and provided almost all the photos in the magazine, just a few of the images were supplied by the people who wrote two of the articles. Look carefully and you will see David and several members of his family in the magazine too! David is leading another day long photo workshop at Goodygrane Quarry this year (organised by BF Adventure) on Saturday the 6th of August. The day will look at improving your photography, particularly for beginners and intermediate levels. There will be an indoor demonstration then a practical hands on outdoor session around the quarry. He will be attending the festival on Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd of July and leading a guided nature and photography walk on the Friday. Further details can be found by following the link: www.porteliotfestival.com David has won the category entitled 'Wildlife in the Garden' of the International Garden Photographer of the Year for 2011. His image of a tadpole pushing up from beneath the waters' surface (see below) was judged to be the best in the section. This is the third time David has entered this competition and the third time he has had an image selected in the top six; but this is the first time he has won!  David's new book 'Photographing Cornwall' has just been published. As well as containing 93 colour landscape photographs the book also contains exact details as to how David took the photos: time of year, time of day, grid reference of the locations etc. The book is priced at £8.95. for more details about David's books click here.  David is to run a photographic workshop at Paradise Park, Hayle on the 18th of June. This will be limited to ten people and will cost £50 per person which will include admission, tuition, buffet lunch and refreshments. He is giving his time free of charge so that more than half of the money raised will be donated to Cornwall Wildlife Trust. For more information click here. For the third time in four years David has had images selected for the final round of judging in the 'Wildlife in the Garden' section of the International Garden Photographer of the Year for 2011. His image of a blue tit on a washing line has been highly commended whilst his image of a tadpole has been chosen as one of the top six images in that section and is still in with a chance of winning. Both images will be featured in the annual book. It was an interesting trip though it wasn't as cold there as it might have been, in fact it wasn't much colder than Cornwall! The images which pleased David most were of a golden eagle in the snow, an example of which is shown below: .jpg) David has just completed two new books which will be published in 2011: Photographing Cornwall and Walking in Penwith, have a look at the books page for more information. David has been awarded 'Highly Commended' for his wildlife photography in the annual awards of the Outdoor Writers' and Photographers' Guild in November 2010. The Cornwall Hospice Care calendar for 2011 has just been launched, this features 12 of David's landscape photos of Cornwall. You can buy a copy at any Cornwall Hospice Care Shop across the county. David has just been working on a project to photograph nightjars. The pair he has been photographing have now raised their second brood of two young for the year and that's good going for nightjars! Here is one of the photos he has taken on the rare occasion in July that we had a good sunset! .jpg) David has had three images shortlisted for the British Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards. In this case the images are of a midge swarm, taken using a slow shutter speed, a pied wagtail in a car park next to a car tyre and a robin perched on an old boot in his garden during the snow last winter. David has had an image shortlisted in the 'Bird Behaviour' section of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for 2010; his selected image is of a skylark preening amongst thrift. David will be making an appearance, if that is the right word, on Radio Cornwall on Thursday the 18th of March, 4.15pm on the Martin Bailie show. This will be to promote his new book, A Cornish Year. David is doing a book signing for his new book, 'A Cornish Year', at the Bookshelf bookshop in Saltash (58 Fore Street) on the 30th of March between 10am and 1pm. He would be very pleased to see you there! David has had an image selected as a finalist in the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition. This is in the section entitled 'wildlife in the garden'. His shot is of a great spotted woodpecker drumming, showing the movement in the head using a slow(ish) shutter speed. Just in case you are interested, he didn't enter it last year. We will find out how the woodpecker has done some time during April. David's latest book entitled 'A Cornish Year' is to be published in March 2010. This book looks at David's wildlife activities through a year and is written in diary style along with anecdotes. It gives readers ideas for how they might get more involved with wildlife in Cornwall as it introduces a variety of groups, places and specialists who regularly lead walks and talks around the county. Priced at only £9.95 this book has lots of colour and interest. In many ways this is the follow up to David's most successful book, 'Wild about Cornwall'. See book page for details. David was awarded the 'Speech, Music and Drama' award by the WI for 2009; he received this trophy in October at the hall for Cornwall. It was given to David for his work in promoting photography to the Women's Institute through lectures, walks and workshops. David has provided all of the photos for the Trebah Garden 2010 calendar; visit Trebah to purchase a copy and see lots of David's cards! He is now putting together the images for their 2011 calendar. David's exhibition with Steve Jones at Geevor Mine was due to end in the spring but by popular demand it has been extended right through the summer and into the autumn of 2010; if you haven't been yet then do please try to get along, the whole exhibition looks great and has smells and sounds as well as photos!
